Golf

What a fantastic weekend of golf and a deserved winner of the green jacket. Danny Willett kept his head better than the rest and landed his first major with a steady round, doing the right things at the right times. How this will affect Jordan Spieth is anybody’s guess but he has proved resilient before and should bounce back, many players wouldn’t. It was also a fantastic result for European Golf in general with Westwood, Casey, Fitzpatrick Rose and McIlroy all finishing top ten. Hideki Matsuyama looked like giving us a good return but started the final round badly and tied 7th, a small ew return with Paddy Power.

On to this week and we have a great event on the European Tour, the Spanish Open at Valderrama, hosted by Sergio Garcia. A decent field has assembled and Sergio is himself favourite but the pressure of everyone wanting him to win and his outside duties of hosting make him poor value at around 6/1. I don’t have any fancies at all so probably better to concentrate on the Spanish players like Cabrera Bello and Canizares and consider the likes of Luiten and Peters who haven’t had the transatlantic flights to endure that the Masters players have had to deal with.

On the US tour it is the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town, Hilton Head, South Carolina. Jim Furyk won last year in a play –off against Kevin Kisner but cannot defend due to his wrist injury and the tournament is wide open for betting purposes. Jason Day is favourite but how will he cope with last week’s let down, played well but never really challenged. Of the outsiders, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Russell Henley should go well at decent prices.
