Neither of the two tournament winners, Russell Knox in the Travelers and Anthony Wall in the Paul Lawrie Matchplay made the headlines this morning due to an unbelievable round of golf from Jim Furyk who was the first pro to shoot 58 for a round in tournament golf. Furyk who was one of the few guys to ever shoot 59 played almost the perfect round of golf and afterwards suggested it could have been even a 56 or 57 as he lipped out and then failed to take advantage of a couple of the easiest holes. His name will go into the history books and quite deserved for a model pro who seems to be universally liked by his fellow golfers.
Anthony Wall beat Alex Noren in the Matchplay final, an event that failed to sparkle in Scotland but it was a Scotsman, Knox who landed his second PGA title when holding his nerve at 18 to beat Jerry Kelly by one shot at the Travelers. Our three suggestions all finished top twenty but never really challenged.
That’s it for the golf blog for three or four weeks, we will be back with a Ryder Cup preview towards the end of September.
