Barcelona, Bayern Munich and last year’s finalists Atletico Madrid all got their Champions League campaigns off to a winning start as expected. Barcelona thrashed Celtic 7-0 and Messi left is off field problems behind netting his 36th hat-trick for the club. Bayern swept aside FK Rostov 5-0 thanks to first half strikes from top-scorer Lewandowski and Muller and it looks like the German champions have unearthed another new star in Joshua Kimmich, who bagged a second half brace, and last year’s finalist Ateltico Madrid got their campaign off to a winning away at PSV winning 1-0.

Elsewhere Manchester City’s home tie against Monchengladbach was postponed after a torrential thunderstorm and its possible the tie may be played tonight. Arsenal picked up a valuable point away at PSG, Napoli won away at Dynamo Kiev 2-1 and there were 1-1 draws between Benfica and Besiktas and Basel and Ludogorets.

On the domestic front Newcastle United and Barnsley closed the gap on leaders Huddersfield to one point after they thrashed QPR 6-0 and Wolves 4-0 away from home respectively, while leaders Huddersfield lost 1-0 at Brighton. Norwich went fourth after beating Wigan 2-1 at Carrow Road as Birmingham could only manage a 0-0 draw at Reading.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Ipswich, who extended Derby’s woeful start to the season, Leeds ensured Blackburn stayed bottom beating them 2-1 at Elland Road, Preston easily defeated Cardiff 3-0, Fulham and Burton drew 1-1 and Sheffield Wednesday came from 2-1 down to beat Bristol City 3-2 grabbing the winner deep in to injury time.
