Steve Taylor

Charley Hoffman won his fourth PGA tour title as he kept his head over the closing holes better than his opponents. It was an exciting final round with the lead changing hands a few times but Hoffman held his nerve holing a couple of decent par savers on the back nine. The challengers came and dropped away with Patrick Reed looking the biggest danger but he couldn’t find the bottom of the cup when it mattered. Our selection Billy Horschel tied fourth and just couldn’t find that extra few birdies over the last few holes. If you backed him ew you will get a small return.

In China, Soomin Lee made up for his disappointment in Malaysia earlier in the season when losing from a winning position, by holding off our selection Joost Luiten, who couldn’t get going early on even though he finished the back nine well. He seems destined to play a supporting role this season but as an ew bet you will have made a profit. All three of our selections played well with Fleetwood inside the top twenty and an encouraging eight from Thorbjorn Olesen showing he is on his way back. He could be worth a few quid for the British Open at a big price.

This week we have the Volvo China Open in Beijing where Wu Ashin is the defending champion. The Chinese compete in numbers and it is distinctly possible that they could again provide the winner. My knowledge of Asian golf is limited so it is difficult to be confident but Jeunghun Wang is a South Korean who is just breaking through and might be worth a small ew bet. Luiten is favourite but I have to leave him this week (so he wins!!) Add Olesen and Bourdy for a couple of fun bets.

In America it is the Zurich Classic of New Orleans where Jason Day is the clear favourite to take Justin Rose’s title. This is a course for low scoring, Rose shot 21 under last year, so we need guys who go for it. My three against the field are, Rickie Fowler, Charles Howell and Boo Weekley who have course form or are playing at a decent level at present.
