The ATP action at the Madrid Masters is well underway now and the main news so far this week was the withdrawal of third seed Roger Federer due to lower back pain. Nadal is now safely through to the third round after dispatching the talented young Russian Kuznetsov 6-3 6-3 yesterday.
Other players who have already progressed to the third round are second seed Andy Murray, who again looked far from convincing taking three sets to beat veteran Stepanek 7-6 3-6 6-1, and it’s definitely worth opposing him if he comes up against better opposition like Carreno-Busta, Simon, Berdych or Nadal. Tenth seed Richard Gasquet joined Murray in the second round seeing of home favourite Fernando Verdasco in three sets while Milos Raonic seeded 11 is also through to the third round after struggling past Dolgopolov in three sets.
Our other tournament pick, sixth seed Kei Nishikori, gets his campaign underway today against the unseeded Fognini and if the Japanese number one play’s like he did at Barcelona recently he should progress to the third round. Top seed Djokovic also gets his campaign underway today against teenage star Borna Coric, who dispatched Estoril winner and home favourite Almagro 6-2 6-2 yesterday.
Fourth seed Wawrinka also gets his Madrid campaign underway today and after a run of disappointing results at Masters Series events this year he could really do with a confidence booster, especially with the defence of his French Open crown only a fortnight away.
However, he faces a potentially daunting task against the in-form Aussie Nick Kyrgios and with their bitter rivalry still bubbling under the surface after Kyrgios insulted Wawrinka on court last year, this has the potential to be one of the matches of the tournament. If both players bring their A games and don’t allow emotion to get the better of them I expect this one to be really close, three sets is likely and with the Over 23.5 Games line available at Evens, I suggest taking it.
Eighth seed Tomas Berdych gets his campaign underway today against qualifier Istomin and should progress as he leads the head-to-head 4-0. The same applies to seventh seed Tsonga and compatriot Gael Monfils seeded 11, as both face players they’ve never lost against. Tsonga faces Ramos-Vinolas and leads the head-to-head 3-0, while Monfils faces Pablo Cuevas who he has won all three encounters against.
Other matches of interest today are two young up and coming players in Pouille and Carreno-Busta, who both reached their first ATP finals this year on clay. They face more experienced veterans of the tour in Querrey and Simon, Carreno-Busta beat Simon in straight sets last week at Estoril, so it’s a surprise to see him as the outsider of the two today, while Pouille is favourite against Querrey in what should be a close encounter given Querrey’s preference for quicker conditions.
