Golf

Jason Day led wire to wire in The Players Championship to add yet another big title to an already unbelievable year. The Australian, World No.1 has now won seven of his last seventeen tournaments including his first major the USPGA, the World Matchplay and The Players. He is on a hot streak right now and is difficult to oppose although the bookies will price him accordingly.

We were definitely spot on with our prediction that Jeunghan Wang was a young golfer to watch out for. He has now won back to back having landed the Mauritius Open after his win in China. If he wins in Ireland this weekend he will become only the third player to win three in a row on the European tour following Sir Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros.

The European tour event in Ireland is the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory foundation at the K Club. The course is a tough one, long and the weather can play a part if the winds blow. Rory is a short priced favourite and he will be all out to win, he could do but I’m not for 4/1 shots in golf tournaments. Danny Willett is second favourite but he missed the cut at The Players and due to all his media commitments he should maybe be overlooked for a few weeks. Shane Lowry is playing well enough to be considered and Graeme McDowell is also running into form so could go close. Of the non – Irish I still like Thorbjorn Olesen to go close somewhere soon.

In the States, it is The AT&T Byron Nelson in Irving, Texas. Steven Bowditch defends the title for which Jordan Spieth is favourite. Danny Lee is a big price here and the two Johnson’s, Zach and Dustin both have course form and have played well enough recently to fancy their chances. A bet on those three will hopefully reward us this week.
