After losing most of Monday to rain the ATP and WTA tournaments at Queens, Halle and Birmingham managed to get their schedules almost back on track yesterday. As predicted in Monday’s articles some of the top-five seeds at Queens, Halle, Birmingham and Mallorca failed to make the transition from clay to grass, or failed to back up good results from last week on grass.
At Queens second seed Wawrinka (1.3) and fourth seed Gasquet (1.18) both lost at the first round stage, fifth seed Cilic came from a set down to win and third seed Raonic lost the first set, won the second set when his match was suspended. At Halle second seed Nishikori came from a set down to win, third seed Thiem plays today, fourth seed Berdych (1.33) lost and top seed Federer plays today.
At Birmingham top seed Radwanska first round match was suspended at 4-4, fourth seed Bencic plays today while second seed Kerber and fifth seed Kvitova both won their first round matches. At Mallorca top seed Muguruza (1.14) lost her first round match, second seed Jankovic and third seed Ivanovic won while both fourth seed Mladenovic (2.10) and fifth seed Putinseva (2.00) lost.
Also, three of my four outright tournament selections Murray (6/4), Zverev (40/1) and Goffin (16/1) are through to the second round of their respective tournaments and look to have a good chance of making it to the quarter-finals as Murray is a strong favourite to beat compatriot Bedene at Queens, while Zverev leads the head-to-head against veteran compatriot Becker 2-0 and Goffin holds the same head-to-head record against veteran Stakhovsky.
