This week’s ATP tennis action at Marseille, Rio and Delray Beach is now down to the quarter-final stage and four of my outright selections are let and still in with a shout of reaching Sunday’s finals. Three of my big priced outright selections Struff (90/1) and Paire (33/1) at Marseille and Fritz (40/1) at Delray Beach, were all very unfortunate not to progress. Struff and Paire lost to NextGen star Medvedev on third set tie breaks while Fritz lost 6-4 in the third set against compatriot Young.
We still have third seed Kyrgios (11/2) running for us at Marseille still and he has looked in good shape so far this week and should be too good for qualifier Gombos today and progress to Saturday’s semi-finals, where he will face either seventh seed Simon or second seed Tsonga. At Rio both of my outright selections Carreno-Busta (14/1) and Schwartzman (40/1) are through to the quarter-finals and Carreno-Busta faces Buenos Aires winner Dolgopolov today and i’m quietly confident the young Spaniard can level the head-to-head at 1-1 as I think last week’s exploits will catch up on Dolgopolov today.
Schwartzman faces much tougher opposition today against second seed Thiem and he trails the head-to-head 2-0, which is a negative, but he has had much more competitive game time on the surface of late and with Thiem not at the peak of his confidence after a disappointing start to the year, an upset is definitely not out of the question.
At Delray Beach third seed Sock (11/2) is through to the quarter-finals and will face compatriot and fifth seed Johnson today. Sock leads the head-to-head 4-3 and while i'm quietly confident he will progress to Saturday’s semi-finals I don’t expect it will be easy a Johnson has beaten him on hard courts in the USA before. The winner will face either Memphis finalist Young or qualifier Darcis in the semi-finals while the top-half of the draw looks set to be a showdown between top-seed Raonic and seventh seed Del Potro who face Edmunds and Querrey respectively today for a place in the semi-finals.
