Top-seed Roger Federer got his Basel campaign off to an easy winning start seeing off American NextGen star Tiafoe 6-3 6-1. Second seed Cilic also won his opener against Mayer as did third seed Goffin against Gojowczyk. Other seeded players to win their first-round encounters were fifth seed Sock against Lucky Loser Pospisil and sixth seed Bautista Agut against Kukushkin. Unseeded players to progress to the second round were Paire, Shapovalov, Chung, Haase, Harrison and Mayer who knocked out eighth seed Zverev.

Today’s matches involve remaining seeds, fourth seed and Stockholm winner Del Potro against Sousa and seventh seed and Moscow semi-finalist Mannarino faces Antwerp semi-finalist Bemelmans. Other matches involving unseeded players are Young against qualifier Benneteau, Donaldson against qualifier Fuscovic and Coric against Wild Card Laaksonen.

Top two seeds at Vienna Zverev and Thiem got their campaigns off to a winning start defeating Troicki and Rublev respectively. Fifth and seventh seeds Isner and Anderson both lost against Kohlschreiber and qualifier Garcia-Lopez respectively. Other unseeded players to progress to the second round were Simon, qualifier Herbert, Ramos-Vinolas, Edmund, qualifier Novak, Pouille and Gasquet (advised 18/1)

Antwerp winner and eighth seed this week Tsonga (1.25) gets his campaign underway against the talented Khachanov today and the French veteran is worth opposing as he may be less motivated having won a title last week. Fognini (advised 50/1) gets his campaign underway against Schwartzman and the Italian leads the veteran 1-0 and this should be a highly competitive encounter as both players are in good form. Moscow winner Dzumhur (1.40) gets his campaign underway against Berankins in a repeat of the Moscow final on Sunday and I fancy Berankis to turn the tables on this occasion as he could be more motivated this week as he’s playing on a special exemption and protected ranking due to returning to the ATP Tour after a long injury lay-off.
