Tennis

This week’s ATP 500 tennis action at Basel and Vienna is now down to the quarter finals stage. At Basel top-seed Federer is still on course to win a record ninth home title and he will face Mannarino for a place in Saturday’s semi-finals. Second seed Cilic is still on course to reach Sunday’s final and he will face qualifier Fuscovics today. Third seed Goffin faces fifth seed Sock for the third time and the Belgian is clear favourite to progress to the semi-finals as he leads the head-to-head 2-0 and is in much better form at present. Finally, the match of the day is between fourth seed Del Potro and sixth seed Bautista Agut and Del Potro leads the head-to-head 2-1 and is favourite to progress to the semi-finals.

At Vienna top-seed and world number three Zverev is still on track to reach Sunday’s final and he will face Antwerp winner and eighth seed Tsonga for a place in Saturday’s semis. The head-to-head stands at 1-1 and with Tsonga having played non-stop since the beginning of last week I expect Zverev to take this one in straight sets. Second seed and home hope Thiem is still on track to reach Sunday’s final and he will face the unseeded Pouille who leads the head-to-head 2-0. Two unseeded players Schwartzman and Kohlschreiber will contest the other quarter-final from the top-half of the draw and this is the first time the have met on the ATP Tour. The other two quarter finalists from the bottom half of the draw Struff and Britain’s Kyle Edmunds are unseeded and this is the first time they have met on the ATP Tour.
