No major upsets at the French Open for the first round of the mens draw so far. Lucky Loser Bolelli proved there’s no such thing as an easy draw against Nadal, pushing him close in the first set. He went a break up in the second set before Nadal stormed back and at the time of writing Bolelli was 3-0 up in the third set after the match was suspended Monday night due to rain.
As usual there was a host of big upsets on the women’s side and the highest profile ones were defending champion and fifth seed Ostapenko crashing out in the first round and ninth seed Venus Williams also lost her opener. Britian’s Konta was seeded, but here miserable run at the French Open continued, losing in the first round for the third straight year.
Cameron Norrie and Heather Watson restored some pride for British supporters winning their respective first round matches against Gojowczyk, who retired injured, and Dodin. Norrie will face a much stiffer test in his next match against French Number One and fifteenth seed Pouille and Watson will face the winner of the suspended match between Lepchenko and sixteenth seed Mertens.
