It’s men’s semi-final days at the 2018 Wimbledon championships and as you already know Roger Federer will not be winning a record equalling ninth title after he lost from two sets to nil up against eighth seed Anderson, who was playing his first Wimbledon quarter final. Anderson faces fellow veteran and ninth seed Isner for a place in Sunday’s final and it should be a cracker with both players in the best form of their career at present. Isner is contesting his first Grand Slam semi-final and this is Andersons second after reaching theUS Open final last year (lost to Nadal).
Isner leads the head-to-head 8-3 and it includes their only match on grass, which Isner won and he also won their last five matches in a row, but all these matches came between 2008 and 2015. There’s clearly very little between the two on current form and they are the two best servers left in the tournament. Isner leads the tournament for Aces served and he has the best first serve won percentage the active players left in the tournament. I was impressed by both players in their last matches against Federer and Raonic respectively, but I think Isners win against Raonic was more impressive as Federer was clearly not at his best and I think Isner will edge this one in four or five sets.
The second semi-final is a real blockbuster between two of the games greatest players second seed Nadal and eleventh seed Djokovic who is contesting his first Grand Slam final since the 2016 French Open. Nadal is aiming to win a third Wimbledon title and Djokovic is aiming to win a fourth title and the head-to-head currently stands at 26-25 in favour of Djokovic. They’ve met three times on grass and Nadal leads the head-to-head 2-1 but Djokovic won their last meeting back in 2011 at Wimbledon in four sets. I think Djokovic has the advantage today because he seems to be hitting top-form and he’s fresher having played less matches than Nadal this year and Nadal’s five set win against Del Potro is likely to catch up with him if today’s match goes the distance.
