The first round of the League Cup featuring just EFL teams at this stage got underway last night and there were a few Championship teams who bit the dust against lower league opposition. Last year’s semi-finalists Bristol City lost at the first time of asking this season going down 1-0 at home against Plymouth. Ipswich were taken to extra-time and penalties at Exeter and it was the League One minnows who rocked St James Park and won the penalty shoot-out. Middlesbrough were also taken to extra time and penalties at the Riverside by Notts County and the Boro just scraped through winning the penalty shoot-out.

Wigan, Sheffield Utd and Birmingham were they other Championship teams who lost last night, Wigan were thrashed 3-1 by League One’s Rochdale who came close to being relegated last season, the Blades poor start to the season continued as they were knocked out by Hull and Birmingham found Reading too good at the Vitality Stadium. The majority of the other Championship teams in action last night all progressed to the second round. Forest had to work hard for their win as Bury pushed them to extra-time at the City ground and Blackburn travelled north to face Carlisle at Brunton Park and everyone involved with Carlisle must have had a torrid night as they were thrashed 5-1.

Leeds continued their good start to the season beating Bolton 2-1 at Elland Road, Derby joined them in the second round after beating Oldham 2-0 at Boundary Park and Millwall left it late against Gillingham at the Den just edging the match 1-0. West Brom, Aston Villa and Brentford also progressed to the second round after beating lower league opposition Luton 1-0, Yeovil 1-0 and Southend 4-2 respectively.
