The Premier League and EFL action returns this weekend after the break for the UEFA Nations League and things get underway tonight with a big Midlands derby Championship clash between Birmingham and West Brom at the Hawthorns. Birmingham won five of the last ten corresponding fixtures against West Brom at St Andrews, but the Baggies won the last two, and on current form they are the better side and if they can make their extra quality count and take their chances they should win and at worse leave with a point.

This weekend’s Premier League actions kicks-off at lunch-time and it’s a blockbuster between heavyweights Spurs and Liverpool at Wembley. Spurs have a slight edge in terms of past corresponding league fixtures; Spurs won six of the last ten, including last season’s impressive 4-1 thrashing. Liverpool won twice and there last win was 3-0 back in 2014. Seven of the last ten corresponding fixtures ended with 2 or more goals scored and with Spurs and Liverpool strikers Kane and Salah likely to take part and a host of other world class forwards on show this trend is likely to continue again today.

The traditional tea-time kick-off is another potentially high quality game between high flying Watford, who along with Chelsea and Liverpool, are the only teams left who have won all four of their league games so far this season. Watford don’t have the best record at Vicarage Road against Manchester Utd winning only one of their last seven corresponding matches in all competitions, but if Watford continue to play like they did when beating Spurs 2-1 last time out and United continue to struggle for consistency and better away form, they could easily find themselves facing defeat again today.

Chelsea will be keeping a close eye on the Spurs and Liverpool game at lunch-time because if they draw and Chelsea beat Cardiff at Stamford Bridge, they will become the new outright Premier League leaders. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City welcome promoted Fulham to the Etihad tomorrow and it should be an entertaining encounter between two technically sound, attacking teams.

City are yet to hit top-form this season but are still unbeaten winning five and drawing one of their six competitive matches, and after a slow losing their first two league games, Fulham have gone on a four match unbeaten run, winning three drawing the other. It’s of course going to be damage limitation for the Cottagers but if they can keep things organised, defend well as a team and get some success on the counter attack they are more than capable of giving City a good game and pushing the close if they’re not at their best.

Newcastle United’s tough start to the Premier League season continues tomorrow as they face Arsenal at St James Park and history is not on the Toons side because they’ve only won three of the last eighteen corresponding Premier League fixtures, but they did stop a four match losing streak last season winning 2-1. The remaining game is a bottom-six clash between Huddersfield and Crystal Palace at the Kirklees Stadium and it’s a tough one to call as Huddersfield are yet to win a competitive game so far this season, losing three and drawing two.

Palace have won two of their five competitive games so far this season, 0-2 against Fulham in the league and 0-1 against Swansea in the league Cup. They won this corresponding league fixture 2-0 last season and they would have been tempting to side with again, but with Zaha still an injury doubt and Benteke posing little threat in front of goal, I think Huddersfield are more than capable of recording their first competitive win of the season.
