Football

No joy with the football tips again this weekend and it was Fulham who let us down from making a profit as they failed to find the net against a rampant Manchester City, who thrashed them 3-0 at the Etihad with goals from Sane, Sterling and star man Silva.

Chelsea won their fifth straight Premier League game in a row on Saturday coming from behind to thrash a plucky Cardiff 4-1 at Stamford Bridge. The defeat left Cardiff fifth from bottom on two points and unless they can pick up more points than they lose against sides in the bottom half of the table this season it’s not going to be long before they’re firmly rooted in the bottom three.

It was a solid team performance all round from the Blues once they found their stride and star man Hazard stole the show with his first hat-trick of the season. The win kept them top of the league on goal difference from Liverpool, who produced arguably their best performance of the season beating Spurs 2-1 at Wembley Saturday lunch-time, and goals either side of the break from Wijnaldum and Mane were enough to seal victory against a flat and lacklustre Spurs who have lost their last two in the league now.

Title challengers Arsenal and Manchester United both had to fight hard for their 2-1 wins away at third from bottom Newcastle Utd and top-six Watford. Newcastle once again failed to turn home dominance, possession and attempts on goal in to goals after bossing the first half and if you are a Newcastle fan, you might be left wondering why Benitez sold/loaned out some of his best and natural goal scorers, Mitrovic to Fulham and Gayle on loan to West Brom in exchange for striker Rondon, when so far this season they’ve only scored four goals in five league games.

The game of the day in terms of open attacking football, excitement and drama was down on the South Coast at the Vitality Stadium between Bournemouth and ten man Leicester City. The game produced a six goal thriller and the Cherries came out of the blocks on fire and were 3-0 up by half-time with Frazer bagging a brace.

They extended their lead to 4-0 with about ten minutes remaining and you can excuse the Cherries of taking their foot off the pedal, but as soon as they did Leicester had reduced the deficit to 4-2 in a manic few minutes. Leicester’s first came via the penalty spot from Maddison and a minute later Albrighton give the visitors a bit of hope with only a few minutes remaining, but it was to little to late for the Tigers who in fairness were well and truly beaten by the better side on the day.

The tea-time kick-off between Watford and Manchester Utd was really hyped up by the sports media with Watford’s 100% winning start and the ongoing battle between the sports media and United manager Mourinho.

United and Mourinho emerged victorious on this occasion and quietened the sports media at least for the short-term by ending Watford’s 100% winning start to the 2018/2019 season with a determined, hard fought 2-1 win at Vicarage Road. United came out of the blocks fastest and they had the game almost sown up by half time with strikes from top-scorer Lukaku and central defender Smalling, Gray pulled one back for the Hornets midway through the second half and while they fought tooth and nail in search of the equalizer, the United back four and keeper De Gea were in no mood to throw away a valuable three points on this occasion, which leaves them within touching distance of the Champions League places.

However, United are already six points behind Chelsea and Liverpool, four behind City and even at this stage of the season it will be difficult to close these gaps as it’s fully dependent on all three teams faltering for extended periods, which is unlikely at this level given their pedigree and consistency.

On Sunday Wolves continued their impressive start to the 2018/2019 Premier League season with a hard fought 1-0 win at Molineux against a struggling Burnley who have not won a game so far this season. The pressure on new West Ham manager Pellegrini eased somewhat on Sunday when his team finally gelled against Everton at Goodison on Sunday winning 3-1. The Hammers mainly had new signing Andriy Yarmelenko from the Ukraine, who bagged a first half brace, to thank for their first league win of the season and Everton need to turn things round soon if they want to avoid being dragged in to the relegation zone.
