It’s been a routine start to the ATP Tour Paris Masters 1000 Series this week with no major upsets in the first round. All the seeds progressed to the second round and at the time of writing only fourteenth seed Tsitsipas had been knocked out in the first day of second round matches. There’s a feast of potentially good matches today and the pick of the bunch luck to be top-seed Nadal against compatriot and veteran Verdasco, Nadal leads the head-to-head and while Nadal dominates the head-to-head 17-3 this one could be much tougher than previous encounters as Nadal’s not played competitively since the US Open due to injury and Verdasco has been in decent form this year and looked good in his opener.
Fourth seed Sacha Zverev taking on fellow NextGen star American Tiafoe. Zverev leads the head-to-head 2-1, there 1-1 on hard courts and on current form Zverev should take this one but it could be close and easily go to three sets. Eleventh seed Coric faces the in-form Medvedev for the fifth time today and I like Coric here as he’s in form, he won both their hard court matches this year in straight sets but Medvedev has been in decent form indoors reaching the semis at Moscow and Basel so Coric can’t afford to be complacent.
Two of this week’s tournament winner selections eighth seed Isner and qualifier Lopez are in action today and hopefully Isner will extend his 3-0 winning head-to-head against Kukushkin to 4-0 today and Lopez will prove to be hungrier than fifteenth seed Schwartzman, who will be looking forward to returning home for the off season after a long stint on the road.
