Three of the four FA Cup third round replay’s took place last night between Blackburn and Newcastle United at Ewood Park, Luton and Sheffield Wednesday at Kenilworth Road and Stoke and Shrewsbury at the Bet365 Stadium. Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday were the only team to progress in normal time knocking out League Two leaders Luton 1-0. League One Shrewsbury produced a remarkable second half comeback from 2-0 down with only twenty minutes remaining to beat Stoke 2-3.
The first half of the Blackburn and Newcastle replay was a scintillating affair, Newcastle raced to an early 2-0 lead but the Rovers ended the first half on a high levelling the tie and extra-time was needed to separate the two teams . Newcastle finally regained their authority in extra time with strikes from Joselu and Perez to make it 4-2 and this was good enough to see them through to the fourth round.
The final FA Cup third round replay takes place tonight between Southampton and Derby at St Mary’s, which is live on BBC One at 19:45. The first match at Pride Park was a pulsating affair which ended 2-2, the Saints should really have won after defender come striker Redmond scored twice, but their defensive woes came back to haunt them, allowing derby to level within three second half minutes.
Historically, there’s nothing between the two teams as both teams won three of the last nine encounters at St Mary’s. From a betting perspective backing the Saint’s to progress to the fourth round will be popular, however, it does not appeal personally and instead I’m going to opt for the Match Double of BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals as this bet has landed in six of Southampton’s last ten home games and six of Derby’s last ten away games.
Finally, Spurs received a huge blow yesterday as it was confirmed star striker Harry Kane will be out with an ankle injury until at least March, which could scupper their hopes of finishing in the automatic Champions League places, success in the Champions League and FA Cup and it’s also a huge blow for those who backed to win another Premier League Golden Boot award.
