The second round at the AP Tour 250 tournaments this week Lyon and Geneva get underway today and the top four seeds at both events also join the action except top seed Zverev at Geneva who’s already through to the quarter finals after winning his opening match easily beta Gulbis 6-2 6-1 and fourth seed Auger-Aliassime at Lyon who knocked out Aussie Millman in straight sets.
There’s already been a quite a few upsets with several seeded players losing in the first round at both tournaments. At Geneva sixth seed Mannarino lost in the first round to Ramos Vinolas (advised 22/1), seventh seed Aussie veteran Ebden also lost to Jarry from Chile (advised 22/1 and eighth seed Seppi was upset by Bolivian Dellien.
At Lyon fifth seed Lajovic lost to French veteran Tsonga, seventh seed Herbert (advised 50/1) was upset in his second-round encounter against the out of form American Johsnon. Eighth seed Hurkacz also crashed out in the first round against the experienced clay court veteran Cuevas who could be a serious outside contender as he’s been winning a lot of matches on the surface prior to this week.
The feature matches of today at Geneva could be between second seed qualifier Dzhumur and second seed Wawrinka and it could be a close one as there both gifted, talented players. Fifth seed Albot faces a potential tough test against one of the NextGen clay stars Londero but Albot’s also produced some decent form this year and he won’t be a push over as he demonstrated against NexGen Italian clay star and qualifier Sonego in the first round.
Third seed Garin begins his campaign today against Daniel from Japan and from and while the head-to-head stands at one all Garin should win if he produces anywhere near is winning clay form having won nine of his last ten matches on the surface. Fourth seed Fucsovics also begins his Geneva campaign today and he faces a potentially tough first test against clay court expert Delbonis from Argentina. Two of my tournament selections Ramos and Jarry are in action today against Sousa and Kudla respectively and Ramos-Vinolas potentially has the best chance of progressing to the quarter finals as he leads the head-to-head against Sousa 5-2.
At Lyon top seed Basilashvili and second seed Bautista Agut (5/1) start their campaigns today against French Lucky Loser Lamasine and French Wild Card Moutet who knocked out the in-form American Opelka in the first round. Third seed NextGen star Shapovalov also starts his campaign today against Humbert from France who is ranked 61 and should provide the young Canadian whit a good test as Humbert thrashed 2018 semi-finalist Corrie in the first round. One of my outright tournament selections for Lyon (Paire 20/1) faces a tough test to reach the quarter finals against experienced veteran clay expert Cuevas but Paire leads the head-to-head 3-1 and hopefully, he’ll continue that domination against the Uruguayan today.
