It’s day four and third round day at this year’s men’s Wimbledon championships and if day three is anything to go by fans are in for another day of high quality and entertaining tennis. It was a good day for all-time greats second seed Federer and third seed Nadal yesterday as Federer breezed past Brit Clarke three sets to love and Nadal produced an uncharacteristic emotional display against the controversial and times unorthodox Aussie Kyrgios, whose on court antics helped spur Nadal on to roaring at his box and more unusually the Wimbledon fans in an effort to get them firmly on his side.
This was a side many fans have not seen from Nadal at Wimbledon at the second round stage, but it worked for the King of Clay, and his intensity in the last two sets was similar to the level he produces in Grand Slam finals and he eventually ground his way to the finishing post winning 6-3 3-6 7-6 7-6. Eighth seed Nishikori was the only other top ten player in action yesterday and he made light work of dealing with British number two Corrie winning in straight sets 6-4 6-4 6-0.
The unseeded Dan Evans is the only male British player to make it through to the third round, which matches his best result at Wimbledon, after seeing off eighteenth seed Basilashvili in straight sets. Looking ahead to today’s men’s action and top seed and defending champion Djokovic will look to maintain his perfect start to Wimbledon by beating big serving and hitting Pole Hurkacz in straight sets today on centre court.
Fourth Seed and 2018 finalist Anderson and tenth seed Khachanov are the only other top ten stars in action today and Anderson is the clear favourite to see off the unseeded Argentine Pella, while Khachanov faces a potentially much sterner test today against former top-ten star and twenty third seed Bautista Agut, who leads the head-to-head 3-2.
