Where down to the quarter finals stage of Wimbledon 2019 and there’s a quick turnaround for the last eight players of Women’s championship as they line up again today after contesting yesterday’s manic Monday fourth round matches, while the men get a day’s rest and are back in action tomorrow.
There were two big shocks yesterday as top seed and tournament favourite Barty crashed out against the in-form unseeded American Riske 3-6 6-2 6-3 and the well fancied third seed Pliskova crashed out after an epic three set encounter against unseeded compatriot Muchova.
Jo Konta sent home fans wild with delight again after coming from a set down to knock out two-time Wimbledon champion and sixth seed Kvitova 4-6 6-2 6-4 yesterday. Jo faces another Czech player in today’s quarter finals in the shape of the unseeded Strycova who leads the head-to-head 1-0 and if the layers are correct Jo will be contesting her second Wimbledon semi-final on Thursday.
If Konta does win she will face either seven-time Wimbledon champion and eleventh seed Serena Williams or the unseeded compatriot of Serena, Riske who are playing each other for the first time today. The other two quarter finals feature the only two top ten players remaining in the Draw.
Eighth seed Svitolina is the favourite to reach a well overdue first Grand Slam semi-final against the unseeded and dangerous Czech Muchova and seventh seed Halep, a former World number one, will aim to reach her second Wimbledon semi-final against the unseeded Zhang from China who leads the head-to-head 2-1.
