It’s quarter finals day on the ATP Tour at this week’s three tournaments in Hamburg, Gstaad and Atlanta. At Hamburg, the cream is rising to the top with the top four seeds Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Fognini and defending champion Basilashvili still in action and they will all aim to reach tomorrows semi-finals today. Top seed Thiem faces Russian Rublev for the third time, the Austrian leads the head-to-head 2-0 and he should extend the head-to-head to 3-0 today if he plays anywhere near his best.
Second seed Alexander Zverev faces the unseeded Serb Krajinovic for the first time today, third seed Fognini faces the unseeded Spanish former top-twenty-star Carreno-Busta and the Italian Veterans tournament could easily end today as he trails the head-to-head 6-0. Fourth seed Basilashvili could also struggle to reach the semi-finals as he faces the unseeded Frenchman Chardy who leads the head-to-head 2-0.
Over in the Alps at Gstaad, the seeded players have also done well with five of the eight seeds remaining. Top seed Bautista Agut (advised @ 10/3) faces fifth seed Sousa today and the Spaniard will hope to extend his winning head-to-head record against Sousa to 8-2 today.
Third seed and Umag winner Lajovic is still in with a shot at winning back-to-back ATP titles this week and to do so he will have to beat Spanish veteran Andujar (advised @ 18/1) today who leads the head-to-head 3-1. Spanish sixth seed Carbaelles Baena faces unseeded compatriot Ramos-Vinolas and Ramos-Vinolas leads the head-to-head 5-3. The other quarter final is between to unseeded players, Italian veteran Fabbiano and German journeyman Stebe and the German leads the head-to-head 2-1.
Finally, over in Atlanta USA there’s good news for British tennis fans as the unseeded Dan Evans and Cam Norrie are both through to the quarter finals. Evans will face American giant 6ft 10” Opelka for the first time tonight as will Cam Norrie against Aussie NextGen star Popyrin. Second seed Fritz faces the unseeded Serb Kecmanovic for the second time today and Fritz will hope to extend that to 2-0 and reach tomorrow’s semi-finals. Finally, the other quarter final is an all Aussie clash between the new star of Aussie tennis De Minaur and a former star Tomic who are plying each other competitively for the first time tonight.
