European Tour

The European Tour resumes with the Czech Masters from the Albatross Golf Resort in Prague and a rare chance for the locals to see Ernie Els who has accepted an invitation to play. Last year saw Andrea Pavan win by two shots from Padraig Harrington and this will be the sixth time the event has taken place. This is not a tournament to get heavily involved in, but we can have a couple of smaller bets on players who have played here before and who might be using this week as a confidence boost. Lee Westwood turns up here after his strong performance at The Open and will be a popular selection this week but there is no juice in the price and better value lies elsewhere. Eddie Pepperell is the probable favourite but as with Westwood, it is all in the price and despite great course form, he is shocking value. That said, either could easily win in this field.

PGA Tour FedEx play-offs continue

BMW Championship Medinah CC, Illinois

The problem of slow play may be the main talking point this week and Bryson DeChambeau has clearly upset a number of players. It is up to the PGA to now deal with this and it would be no surprise if they considered penalty shots rather than the current nominal fines. On to the tournament and this is all about current form and who wants to or needs to win. Not many players who have won over the course before, but Tiger won two USPGA’s here so if he does turn up, we will be able to see exactly where his game is at and just how fit or unfit he is. Even with that course knowledge, it is very difficult to consider backing him. The usual suspects are at the top of the market, McIlroy, Johnson, Koepka, Rose and Rahm, and they should again go well, but those that are already certain to be at East Lake, may use the week to tinker with one or two things, especially if they are not really in contention come the weekend. Those sitting around No. 30 in the FedEx standings will be worth looking at and an outsider to consider is Ian Poulter who played well in the Ryder Cup here and has finished top ten in his last two events. Patrick Cantlay should continue his solid consistent form, but there is not a lot of value in the price, a comment that also applies to Justin Thomas, who never really got going last week, but who has played well all year without winning. If we don’t pick them this week, one of them will surely win!
