Defending champion is Thorbjorn Olesen as the event returns to Rome after a number of years at different courses. Once again, we need to concentrate on current form as there is very little course form to go on, and a number of the top Europeans are playing this event, including Justin Rose, Paul Casey and local favourite Francesco Molinari. Molinari is sure to be popular here, but that is factored into the price. The parkland tree lined course will reward accuracy and expect players who have been challenging in recent weeks, to once again come to the fore.

Ian Poulter won this last year and it kickstarted his career again, which had been a bit in the doldrums. He won in dramatic fashion, defeating Beau Hossler in a play-off. Recent winners of this event include Russell Henley, Phil Mickelson and JB Holmes whilst Henrik Stenson, Matt Kuchar and Johnson Wagner all have solid course form. The course needs accuracy from the tee and the greens are protected by water and some huge bunkers. The final hole, a par four is not for the feint hearted with water all down the left and around the green and a huge fairway bunker to the right. The tournament could be won or lost here.
